A philosophy is an interpretation of Jedi Code and the Virtues. To gain rank within the Jedi Order, a padawan or knight must demonstrate their ability to understand a philosophy through their actions (and their virtue ratings).

Each philosophy has two major virtues and a minor virtue. To advance to the rank of Knight, a character must have one major virtue at least at 5 and the other at least at 4. To advance to the Rank of Master, a character must have one major virtue at least at 8, the other at 6 and the minor virtue at least at 4.

Other Teachings

In the Jedi Order, the above philosophies of the Universal Force, Unifying Force, and Living Force are the accepted philosophies. Padawan and Knight can always adhere to these philosophies.

A Jedi Master may form their own philosophy. After they formulate the philosophy, name it, and once their virtues match their own, newly formed, philosophy they can teach it to their padawan. This philosophy will be called the "Teachings of Master (Name)" until another Jedi Master also takes on this philosophy (usually because a Jedi Knight adhering to the teachings is promoted). When two or more Jedi Masters adhere to the philosophy, it will become an accepted philosophy in the Jedi Order with the name as given by the master that originally formulated it.

Note that creating a new philosophy also requires OOC effort from the player, or players, involved as the philosophy must be be discussed and approved OOCly. New teachings must still adhere to the Two Major, One Minor virtue spread, and the major virtues must be selected from among the light virtues.

It is advised that the minor virtue also be a light virtue, but the other constraints on virtue point distribution do not require this. Note that a dark minor virtue greatly limits the philosophy's adoption, since it proscribes that a specific amount must be spent on a dark virtue, limiting the ability of a player to determine for themselves whether to spend their "one-fifth" on dark or light virtues.
