Changeling Character Creation

Table of Contents

Please use standard character creation rules from the C20 books as well as the additional rules below. Please only use the C20 books. The ST team reserves the right to reject any concept that does not fit with the setting. Please see the FAQ or contact staff if you have any questions.

Allowed Character Types

This list is fairly absolute and very wide-ranging. There is a little room for expansion with sufficient and sustained interest. Please see Holdings, Motleys, and Households below.

Kithain: Boggan, Clurichaun, Eshu, Nocker, Piskie, Pooka, Redcap, Satyr, Selkie, Arcadian Sidhe, Autumn Sidhe, Sluagh, Troll

Kinain: Kinain may be of any Heritage allowed as a Kith.

Denizens: Aonide, Keremet, Moirae

Nunnehi: May-may-gwya-shi, Nanehi, Rock Giant

Inanimae: Glome, Kubera, Ondine, Paroseme, Solimond, Mannikin

Jinn: Ifrit, Lilin, Qareen, Shaytan

Lycians: Bucolic, Maieutic, Oppidan, Quixotic

Other Gallain: Ghille Dhu, Korred, Morganed, Wichtel, Wolpertinger, Swan Maiden

Title and House

All Arcadian Sidhe must begin play with at least Title 1. It must still be purchased as normal.

Title is capped at 2 at creation unless a Household is being created. Please see Holdings below.

Title at creation must be justified. Title 1 is automatically justified for any Sidhe and for members of the Common Kith with Noble parents, meaning parents of any Kith who themselves hold Title. Title 2 must be justified by an accomplishment. For Arcadian Sidhe, this can be a fairly straightforward right of passage but generally requires a more outstanding deed from others.

All Sidhe must belong to a House at creation. Autumn Sidhe may not belong to House Danaan.

Non-Sidhe characters beginning play with Title must also belong to a House. The House must make sense IC. Beaumayn, Danaan, Dougal, Fiona, Liam, and Scathach are the Houses most likely to accept non-Sidhe. Gwydion, Ailil, and Aesin will do so most rarely.

Non-Sidhe characters who begin without Title do not belong to a Noble House. You do not automatically become a member of a Noble House simply by swearing fealty to a member.

Characters may belong to the banner house of Firinne, Tinean, or Barghest if they belong to the relevant sworn House. Firinne may consider the County of Islands their appointed lands given the Goblin Town situation. Barghest may not be Sidhe.

Holdings, Motleys, and Households

Individual characters cannot begin play with the Holdings background. However, groups of three or more characters who want to enter play together as either a motley or a noble household may begin with Holdings up to 3.

If characters enter as a motley, none of them may be Arcadian Sidhe and none may have the Title Background. All must begin play with an Oath of Fealty or other appropriate Oath to the motley as a whole.

If characters enter as a household, they must choose one of the five boroughs of New York to serve as their barony. All five are currently available. This territorial claim will be recognized only by other Changelings and they will want to have some distance from the places of power of other supernaturals. One of the players in a household is allowed and required to take Title 3 and to begin play with an Oath of Fealty to either the count or the countess. The other players are required to begin play with an Oath of Fealty to this baron or baroness. If the household has four or more members, a married couple may begin play as baron and baroness (or two barons or two baronesses).

A sufficient number of players interested enough to go in together would justify opening up at least some character types not currently available. Six completed, sanctionable Hsien characters could create a Dragon Nest and lead to Hsien being allowable character types moving forward. Since only Hsien would belong to a Dragon Nest, none of the characters could be sanctioned if all six were not. Keep this in mind if you want to organize something like this.

A Merfolk Freehold would also be allowed if six completed, sanctionable characters were ready to go and the Kith would subsequently be opened up. However, only the Baron or Baroness would absolutely have to b Mefolk. Morganed, Selkies, and even Aquatic Pooka might be involved. If so, these characters could still be sanctioned individually if things fell through. Although not required, the Hudson Canyon might be the nearest place on the sea floor deep enough and the remnants of past pollution might provide for an interesting storyline. Because the Merfolk Houses are mentioned in C20 with no Boons and Flaws mentioned, those are a small exception to the rule excluding material from old books.

Merits and Flaws

The Burning Revel: Given the mobile nature of this group, it doesn’t make sense for PCs to be among the core motley that always travels from place to place. However, they may have joined it in the past and may join it if it comes to New York.
