New York City is an old city, in American terms, the first settlement in the region having been settled in 1613, as a Dutch trading post on the western shore of Manhattan Island.

Over the course of the nineteenth century, the city was transformed by both commercial and residential development relating to its status as a national and international trading center, as well as by European immigration.

Due to the sudden growth of the city, several smaller domains of previously sovereign kindred are now encompassed by the larger city, which has led to the establishment of several allodial domains, and the granting of rights "by historical precedent".
