Neonates are the lowest rank within society, coming last within the order of precedence. Neonates are their own person and are solely responsible for their own actions.

To advance, neonates must establish themselves, that is, make introductions, gather a social network, show their value to the clan, etc. There is no exact rule of what should be done to become an ancilla, but marrying or establishing a new nest is a great way to gain status to build up to the next rank.
