Crescent Place Fencing Club

A fencing club in London, near the Duke of York's military school

Lies in: London

A fencing club for gentlemen and officers of the army, situated on the corner of Herbert Crescent and Hans Place.

Crescent Place is some distance away from of the Duke of York's military school, the Chelsea barracks, and the Hyde park barracks, and is frequented by both officers and gentlemen of means.

The club offers a wide floor for fencing, observable from both the second-floor balcony as well as the lounge where drinks can be enjoyed after a few matches. Matches are overseen by the club's steward de salle, and the club employs several footman to serve drinks and assist members with changing their gear, or to run any errants required.

Members are allowed to bring a lady guest or gentleman into the club. Guests are expected to spectate, not to participate, but exceptions can be made on the basis of merit or the guest's standing in another salle.

Of note are the club's biannual competitions, held in the months of March and September. Both competitions are held in the span of two weeks, during which the club's members compete with each other in a traditional competition scheme. The matches, especially the later matches of a competition, are often spectated by invited guests.

Additionally, a unique feature of the club among the fencing salles of London is the ranking system employed by the club. As many of the club's members have duties beyond London, and are often away for extended periods of time, the steward of the salle maintains a point-based system to score a member's performance based on challenge matches.
