Rule Proposal: Servants

No tags
Old version of Servants
Table of Contents

Serving staff are individuals who work directly for you and who you need to pay for from your normal finances. If staff are unpaid, they will leave and it may be difficult to attract more.

Serving staff can have between 0 and 5 dots depending on how skilled they are. Jobs have an expected skill rating, and people generally fill jobs that are within 1 dot of their skill rating. A bigger deviation means they will soon move to a different position.

What staff do you need?

Your estates are the primary determinant of what staff you need, but there is some additional staff required.

To calculate your final staff requirements, add the staff of all components, add personal staff and then add management for the kitchen staff, the male staff and the female staff (see below).

Personal Staff

Every male person living in your estates needs access to a Valet, while every female person in your estate needs access to a Ladies Maid. These are not included in the component staff.

  • +1 Ladies Maid per female living there
  • +1 Valet per male living there

Kitchen Management

An estate includes a kitchen to provide food for the servants (even if it does not provide for any Kindred living there). If you have fewer than five members of staff, they can make their own dinner.

If you have more than five members of staff, you need to have a cook or a chef. If you have the Dining Component, the cook or chef from that component counts, and they are in charge of the kitchen maids. Do not count chefs, cooks or kitchen maids as female or male staff for determining managers listed below.

  • If you have 5+ staff, and no cook or chef, +1 Cook or Chef

Male Staff Management

You require a Butler. Additionally, you require an underbutler for every geographically separate estate with three or more male staff.

For every full five male staff, you need an additional male staff member to manage them, such as a Head Valet.

  • +1 Butler
  • +1 Underbutler per extra separate estate
  • +1 additional male staff per full 5 (not counting the chef)

Female Staff Management

You require a Housekeeper. Additionally, you require a Head Housemaid for every geographically separate estate with three or more female staff.

For every full five female staff, you need an additional female staff member to manage them.

  • +1 Housekeeper
  • +1 Head Housemaid per extra separate estate
  • +1 additional female staff per full 5 (not counting the cook or kitchen maids)

Non-staff

Some people who work directly for you are not staff and as such command different wages. These include Governesses, Groundskeepers (who manage woodland etc). Non-staff employees earn the same rates as staff of their gender and skill, and generally have 3-5 dots.

Business Agents Exception

Agents are paid per their ranking, which nets them 10 pounds per month normally. However, any agent assigned to a business need not be paid separately - though they answer to you, they are on the payroll of the business itself.
