This island one of a thousand owned by the Republic was lucky to have missed the Horde as soon as the Blockade was made; the island shut down and remained silent as the Horde swept past them. Tanners Island is the west-most island in the South Quarter, connected by several bridges. It houses the cities dirty industry, including many tanneries and ovens for burning lime and baking pottery and the cities largest butcheries. The air on Tanners Island is said to be poisonous to those not used to it, and indeed between the stench of piss from open tannery pits, the offal that lies rotting in the street and the smoke from the ovens, it is not a pleasant place to be. The strongly scented flowers at the window sills do provide a bit of relief, but it remains an unpleasant place. Perhaps the most amazing part of this place in the city is that people still live here, they work here. They have no idea what normal smells like, the constant rank and distinct smell of stale urine cooking in the hot sun.
