As such, they are less militarily organized, often working in small task forces in varying teams on a given problem. The tabards for Voran Watch members are white and red, and no rank insignia are normally worn, though officers may wear various fancy hats to identify them. The Voran Watch is often called upon to deal with rowdy students, and is especially skilled in dealing with mages going mad with their magical power, especially as they are often in reality not as supremely powerful as they think they are. The Voran Watch jurisdiction covers the entire East Quarter. ==== History ==== The Voran Watch was created from the student corps of the [[Ivory Tower]], which in turn was a response to locals beating up on students whom they distrusted as magic users after the Vorans conquered the part of [[Urt]]. Since then, the Voran Watch has evolved into a professional law enforcement organization, and many non-magic users are amongst its ranks, but arcanists and psions are still a common sight amongst their numbers. ==== Ranks ==== // See also: [[Military Positionsrules/income#Military Commission]] // **Watchman**: The grunts of the Voran Watch mostly spend their time patrolling the city, often keeping an eye out in their own street or neighbourhood. **Armourist**: A slight step above the grunts, Armourists were originally those watchmen devoted enough to wear armour on the job (a hindrance to spellcasters). Since the Voran Watch now has mostly non-caster members, the rank no longer implies this, but the name stuck. **Apprentice Officer**: An apprentice officer leads teams and generally provides organization to the Voran Watch. Many spellcasters who join the watch start here after having gotten some battlefield experience in other area's. This is the first officer position in the Voran Watch. **Officer**: Officers are the higher ranking officers who have experience investigating on their own as well as with teams. This is the minimum rank for nobles who join the organization. **Master-Officer**: Master officers have mastered the art of criminal investigation, have studied the law and must pass a formal exam on the law before they are allowed to progress. This is the maximum rank for commoners, unless married into the nobility. **Arch-Officer**: Originally, the Arch Officer was the leader of the Voran Watch, but as the organization grew, a new rank was created above this rank and now there are several Arch-Officers. Arch-Officers always have some skill in magic - it is not a rule, but in practice this is the case. **Augur**: Up to a few decades ago, the Augur was not a rank but a position held by an elder member of the Voran Watch who specialised in Divination, using that magic to investigate crime. This advantage over other watch members eventually made them the de-facto leaders of the Voran Watch, and when a rank above Arch-Officers was needed, the authority and influence that the position of Augur held was used. Nowadays, the position requires no divination magic, though it certainly helps a lot. ==== Requirements ==== To join the Voran Watch, a character must have neither a criminal background nor a known association with criminals, thieves or similar figures of ill repute.
