The City Guard is a neutral law enforcement group that operates in the Central Quarter, away from the influence of any of the three nations of Duirt. It cares very little for politics and focusses mostly on keeping business running.
The City Guard are not as effective or powerful as the other groups, not having the same backing, and the Maze is a continuous source of problems, but they keep the streets relatively clear of pickpockets and robbers, and they are well respected for their integrity and willingness to help out.
The City Guard jurisdiction covers the entire Central Quarter.
==== History ====
When the central quarter developed, it was a cesspool of criminal scum and activity, and many merchants dealing between the three nations feared having to cross the area to get their goods to its destination, often being levied heavy “taxes” by local criminals to be allowed to pass, if they were kind enough to let you live.
The City Guard was formed by locals who had had enough of the crime and was originally more of a mob financed by citizens and merchants than an actual organization. Some effective leadership from a man named Arcus helped turn the ragtag band of do-gooders into a proper force, and surprisingly wasn't then used to create his own little empire. Instead, Arcus stepped down as head of the guard once the crime wave had ended to become one of the first Judges in the city. The tradition still remains.
==== Ranks ====

**Guardsman**: The guardsman is the most basic rank for the City Guard, involving a lot of patrolling and keeping eyes out. It is varied work though, as patrols are not limited to one area but may span the entire quarter.
**Senior Guardsman**: Guardsman who have proven themselves may be promoted to Senior Guardsman, which generally means they get to pick their patrol times rather than having them assigned.
**Officer**: Officers often get assigned by reputation, and those who do not have such will have a hard time getting any of the guardsman to follow their instructions. Officers are often tasked with investigations, and have a great deal of independence. This is the first officer position in the City Guard.
**Senior Officer**: Those officers who have been working for a long time may be promoted to senior officer. This is not usually granted for heroics or special devotion unless it is rather exceptional, though such acts do usually reduce the total time needed to gain this rank.
**Sentinel**: The Sentinel Guardsman is the highest rank within the City Guard. Upon attaining this rank, members often set themselves a specific, difficult task they wish to accomplish within the central quarter, such as the elimination of a certain gang or securing a certain neighbourhood. Upon completion of this task, they usually retire, often becoming a Judge or taking a similar position.
Requirements
To join the City Guard, a character must live in the city. Members of other factions are not accepted into the ranks of the City Guard, which effectively means nobles cannot apply
