Positions

See also Military Positions

Positions are special jobs of authority and influence which are created by larger organizations to manage their affairs. In general, positions require managing of and reporting to others loyal to the organization.

As positions are granted by a faction, they are more closely linked to those factions in terms of what options are available, and they require the character to likewise be loyal to that faction.

Positions do not generally include the uppermost echelons of leadership and as such, most characters with a position do not report directly to the head of the organization.

What do Positions Pay?

A position grants a base pay of 1 gp per level per week of the character in the position. There are three other factors that affect the final income: nobility, faction interest and career advancement.

Nobility: Nobles get paid additional gold by virtue of being nobles. Specifically, characters with the Married Noble feat gain 1 gp extra per week, while characters with the Noble feat gain 3 gp extra per week (since you can only have one, these do not stack with one another).

Special Faction Interest: Large factions can pay more for certain positions that align strongly with their interest. These positions pay 2 gp / week more than normal. The following positions count as special faction interests:

Eccles and Ecclesian Houses: All religious leadership positions, such as Priests, Abbots, Mother Superiors and House Almoner. Also includes both House and Army chaplains.

Silver Rain Republic and Silverite Houses: Ship captains who own their ship (rather than loaning it from their faction), and Grand Merchants of any variation.

South Vorus and South Voran Houses: House Arcanists, House Psions and variants thereof, as well as Masters teaching at the Ivory Tower.

Advancement: Some advanced positions are available for those who have served a faction loyally and for a longer time. Characters with advancements earn 3 gp / week more.

Advancements are not automatic, but are granted by DM team vote.

To make an advancement, you need to have served in a position for your faction for a period of at least 6 months (time spent on hiatus does not count towards this period). Additionally, you need to have done something to earn the advancement, such as completing a mission or achieving a significant success.

The exact position to which a character advances is left open to the DM team (to be agreed with the player), though it will usually be a higher ranking version of your characters current position (such as Deacon for Priests, Senior Captain (of a larger vessel) for Ship Captains or Grand Master for Ivory Tower Masters.

Only one advancement is granted, though we note that for characters in the Special Faction Interest, an additional title gain may be possible over the long term (though no extra gold is gained). For Eccles this is the position of Bishop, for the Silver Rain Republic the position of Admiral and for Vorus the position of Arch Mage. These are handled as a special case.

What organizations can you serve?

Valid organizations to grant positions are the three countries (Eccles, South Vorus, Silver Rain Republic), an established noble house (minor or major, established in the setting and part of Duirt) or another major group as designated by the DM team. Currently legal are, in addition to the countries and noble houses:

  • Cult of Saint Molina
  • Cult of Saint Theris
  • Assassins Guild
  • Seekers
  • Reivers
  • Central Quarter City Guard

To gain a position, your character must have established loyalty to the organization granting the position, which is represented by their faction on the character sheet. Alternatively, you can gain a position with a faction to which your faction has declared fealty

For example, if your character is loyal to House Asa, they could have a position with either House Asa or with Eccles, as House Asa owes fealty to Eccles.

Note: Positions within the armed forces fall under Military Positions instead

What positions are available?

As with skilled and unskilled labour, we do not provide an exhaustive list of possible positions and you can make up a position that would fit your character. You can make up your own position and the DM team can approve it.

Any positions made up must keep the following restrictions:

  • Must be of limited power and scope
  • Cannot be a skilled or unskilled labour job
  • The existence of the position must not be harmful to the faction
  • Cannot be silly or over the top
  • Must make sense in the setting

Additionally, to take a position, a you must reasonably be a good fit. For example, a man cannot be a lady in waiting and a cleric cannot be house Arcanist.

Some examples of positions (do not require DM team approval to take)

  • Lady in Waiting: A female companion and confidante to a high ranking noblewoman.
  • Herald: Someone, usually male, who delivers official messages between noble houses and conveys proclamations.
  • Seneschal / Mistress of the House: Tends to the servants, manages wages, hires and fires, gives instructions on how to organize festivities, etc. Not a butler, they aren't servants themselves, but managers / CEO's of households of a Noble Family.
  • Steward: Takes care of the finances and administration of a part of the estate of a Noble Family, keeping books and making business decisions
  • Guild Member: Active participator in the guild and its affairs. Available only to guilds (Assassins Guild, Seekers, Reivers). Some factions may have ranks, though rank does not determine pay.
  • Abbot / Mother Superior: Religious official for a monastery or nunnery
  • Priest: Religious official for a community of lay-people. May have gender limitations in certain factions
  • Ship Captain: The commander of a small ship belonging to the faction
  • Master: A teacher at the Ivory Tower
  • House Arcanist / House Psion: A powerful mage working on behalf of a noble house
  • Grand Merchant: Organizer of trade on behalf of a house, usually in charge of a particular trade route or the trade in a particular resource
  • House Almoner: Someone tasked with distributing money to the poor on behalf of a faction
