Item Creation Feats

All Item Creation feats are disallowed except the following:

  • Scribe Scroll*
  • Brew Potion

* Scribe Scroll also allows the creation of Power Stones for psionics, as described in the Psionics Unleashed.

That means feats such as Scribe Tattoo, Craft Wand, etc are NOT available. Only the two listed above.

The Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion feats work as written below, instead of their regular text:

Scribe Scroll

You can create magic scrolls.

Prerequisite: Caster level 1st.

Benefit: You can create a scroll of any spell that you know. Scribing a scroll takes 2 hours if its base price is 250 gp or less, otherwise scribing a scroll takes 1 day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. To scribe a scroll, you must use up raw materials costing half of this base price.

Unlike the Core Rulebook rules for magic item creation, when scribing scrolls, you do not roll a check to make the item. You automatically succeed at the check instead.

However, only you can use the scrolls you created to cast spells (or manifest powers in case of a power stone). Others cannot use your scrolls to cast spells not even with Use Magic Device. They cannot be used to scribe spells into a spellbook (though they can copy from your spellbook directly).

This means you cannot sell, trade or even give away scrolls you create - this feat is a way to get cheaper scrolls, it cannot be used as a source of income.

Special: As per the Psionics Unleashed, Scribe Scroll can also be used by Psions to create Power Stones. All the above rules apply.

Brew Potion

You can create magic potions.

Prerequisite: Caster level 3rd.

Benefit: You can create a potion of any 3rd-level or lower spell that you know and that targets one or more creatures or objects. Brewing a potion takes 2 hours if its base price is 250 gp or less, otherwise brewing a potion takes 1 day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. When you create a potion, you set the caster level, which must be sufficient to cast the spell in question and no higher than your own level. To brew a potion, you must use up raw materials costing one half this base price.

When you create a potion, you make any choices that you would normally make when casting the spell. Whoever drinks the potion is the target of the spell.

Unlike the Core Rulebook rules for magic item creation, when brewing potions, you do not roll a check to make the item. You automatically succeed at the check instead.

However, only you can use the potions you created. This means that the effect only works if you either drink the potion yourself, or if you feed it to another personally. For example, a potion of Cure Light Wounds you created works if you drink it, if it is fed to you by another or if you feed it to another. But if you give it to your friend and they drink it, it does not work.

This also means you cannot sell, trade or even give away potions you create - this feat is a way to get cheaper potions, it cannot be used as a source of income.

Notation on the Character Sheet

When noting homebrew potions or homemade scrolls on the character sheet, please note the following:

  • Prepend the name of any scrolls or power stones you made with Homemade (i.e. Homemade Scroll of Magic Missile)
  • Prepend the name of any potion you made with Homebrew (i.e. Homebrew Potion of Cure Light Wounds)
  • Value should be half the normal Core Rulebook value (i.e. a Homebrew Potion of Cure Light Wounds has a value of 25 gp)
  • Optionally, a note can be added to show it is your own creation in addition.

This way, we can distinguish between potions or scrolls you made (which cannot be sold) and potions or scrolls you received from adventures, purchased from others, etc (which can be sold).

You can use this option directly at character creation to start with a bunch of scrolls or potions you created yourself.
