Beyond High Level

See also Advancement Policy

The setting and stories on Novus Utum are designed with characters of level 6 to 14 in mind. This is the core focus of the campaign.

When your character reaches level 15, you can continue to roleplay the character, but they can no longer participate in the regular adventures, having effectively outgrown the setting.

However, that need not be the end of their story!

When you reach level 15, you may request a special ‘retirement’ story. This story, which the DM team will work out with you, will take the character from their role as elite adventurer to a special notable character within the setting. Some examples of retirement goals:

  • Found your own minor noble house in liege to a major noble house, with your own lands
  • Become a person of note such as an Arch Mage, Bishop or Guild Master
  • Found a new faction or organization such as a thieves or assassins guild or a religious cult
  • Die a super heroic death to save the city that will go into legend

Usually this retirement will build upon the specific characters interests, capabilities and goals as well as previous adventures they participated in, and the goal will be set in collaboration with you.

Upon completion of the retirement story, presuming they are still alive, your character will embrace their new role.

You can continue to roleplay - and advance - with your new character in their new role, though they would no longer be able to join in regular adventures.

Instead, you may be asked to feature in scenes to send lower level characters out to retrieve important items as part of a greater story, becoming quest giver rather than adventurer.

Likewise, DMs may give out quests that involve PCs coming to ask your character for advice as they become mentor instead of pupil. And you may feature in important events in the city.

All of this will be in collaboration with the team, as your character has grown into a well established part of the game world!
