House Feat submission: Monkey Grip

No tags

I am submitting this in the hopes it might become a setting specific feat, something unusual to give players a little more flavor in their creations and bring something interesting to DM scenes, especially during this siege story arc.. This feat has been slightly modified from its original source material so as to give it something more suited to a homebrew approach.

Monkey Grip [Combat]

You are able to use a larger weapon than other people your size.

Prerequisite

Base attack bonus +4

Benefit

You can use melee weapons one size category larger than you are with a -2 penalty on the attack roll, but the amount of effort it takes you to use the weapon does not change. For instance, a Large longsword (a one-handed weapon for a Large creature) is considered a two-handed weapon for a Medium creature that does not have this feat. For a Medium creature that has this feat, it is still considered a one-handed weapon. You can wield a larger light weapon as a light weapon, or a larger two-handed weapon in two hands. You cannot wield a larger weapon in your off hand, and you cannot use this feat with a double weapon.

Normal

You can't use a melee weapon one size category larger than you at all.

That rule already exists in the base core rule book. In the Combat section - subtext for Inappropriately Sized Weapons.

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can't make optimum use of a weapon that isn't properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn't proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder's size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. For example, a Small creature would wield a Medium one-handed weapon as a two-handed weapon. If a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can't wield the weapon at all.

It does potentially change how many hands are needed to use it but it has the -2 for using a weapon so far larger than is made for the person trying to use it.

i am aware of this after much more delving into the rules/rulings about this. however, this would be someone using a large size greatsword like a normal/medium sized greatsword with a -2 penalty, rather then not being able to use it at all due to being too unwieldy. the penalty could be upped if it is deemed as not enough of a trade off.

At this time the staff isn't considering custom content requests. Each deviation from the established approved book content is a potential point of player contention and accusation of favoritism. All previous house rule augmentation to the core rules have been to keep in line with previous established setting continuity and were deliberated by all the staff before starting the new system. Only by staying with the current approved source books can we hope to avoid most of the pitfalls of custom content. It's interesting to note that Pathfinder, in claiming to be a better balanced system, left the Monkey Grip Feat out when converting many of the feats from 3.5
