Differences on Chapter of the Crafters of Suran
The construction of this manse is still in progress. According to current predictions the following will happen:
The central chapter-house of the craftsmen of Suran is a panacea of inspiration. It provides everything a craftsman might desire when designing or prototyping new products. Or when sharing new designs to colleagues. The manse is split into thee mayor sections; one dedicated to the creations of new designs, the next dedicated to rapid prototyping and the last is set aside for testing. Beyond this there is a small retreat for Becna.
After a short training, all automated features of the manse will respond instantly to all conscious thoughts of the craftsman. He will merely need to think about the tool he will need next and it will lie in front on the tool shelf, ready to be picked up at a blind grasp. She only has to think about the intricacies that go into the details of a tiara and they are already there in her design sketches.
The design section contains 5 drawing tables. As mentioned before, drawing table is not really an accurate description. The craftsman merely need to think about a design to have it rendered on one of the tables. Once a design is finished it can be peeled off, keeping a rendering on a substance strongly resembling parchment that can be carried around, even outside the manse. One of the drawing tables is positioned vertically, allowing a single craftsman to share a design, and it's construction, to multiple apprentices in one go. This vertical drawing table allows a single design to be peeled of multiple times, automatically emptying only when the last sheet is peeled off.
The design section also has the ability to render images of the objects to be crafted in golden light. These images are not substantial, allowing craftsmen literally to look inside. Alternatively, exploded and slow assembly views can also be rendered. These show the details of individual components and how they fit together.
The prototyping section is equipped with the tools needed for any of the mundane crafts. As mentioned before, when a craftsman reaches for a tool, he will always pick up the one tool he thinks he needs. Moreover, an elaborate system of bellows will guarantee all fires and furnaces are exactly at the temperature needed for the work to be done.
Should a craftsman decide to bring the tools needed for an exotic craft into the manse, they are available to him with the same constraints as the normal tools already present. His tools are packed and available as if they were never used when he leaves again. Other craftsmen will not be able to use these tools inside the manse, even with the
explicit permission of the owner.
The final section initially seems to be a set of empty rooms. However, the climate in any of these rooms can be controlled to range from the densest blizzard in the north, to the saltiest winds in the west and the blistering heat of the southern desert. This allows for the testing of prototypes in any circumstance imaginable, even if such circumstance would usually not be available in the immediate surroundings of Suran. Nothing produced in these rooms can be taken outside the manse. The same system that controls the climate here also keeps the rest of the manse at a comfortable 22.5 degrees.
Becna's retreat in itself has no special features worth mentioning, but it does provide the only access to the manses hearthstone chamber. In here the creative forces at work inside the manse are focussed into a hearthstone that can transform anything eaten into an edible meal for its wearer.
All of this comes with two drawbacks. First, due to the unconscious expectations of everybody visiting the manse, it will always be at least 5 degrees warmer near the furnaces. Second, more importantly, the manse needs dedicated maintenance from a trained craftsman. This maintenance ranges from rearranging a few tools to cleaning to minor repairs.
Should the craftsman slack off or disappear for a week or longer, signs of disrepair will become noticeable. Initially this will be limited to loose floorboards, designs that rip rather than peel cleanly or the wrong tool showing up, but this will quickly escalate to flickering 3D views and renderings of unconscious thoughts rather than design decisions.
Any craftsman of sufficient experience will be able to pick up the maintenance jobs, slowly ameliorating the detrimental effects. A group effort can speed up the recuperative process, but unless someone actually remains dedicated to keeping things organised, the disrepair will return quicker and quicker. Should some function fail entirely at some point, everybody should either run for cover or start cleaning up quickly.
As part of the compensation for his dedication, the support craftsman is the only one allowed to use the manse for actual production. Other craftsmen are expected to return to their own workshop for production, once prototyping and testing are done, lest the manse becomes to small to fit everybody.
