Rogue planet home to Unity City and capital planet of the Free Worlds Union
Unity is a Rogue Planet - that is, a planet without a star - that circles the galactic core. Its only major settlement, Unity City is the central administration hub from which the Union is administered.
Recent History
Unity was discovered by chance some seventeen hundred years ago, being close to a central hyperspace hub of the Bozzy Spine. At the time, it was noted as an oddity in the log and named PQX-176-R.
The planet was settled in the next century as a supply base and trade center along the route, population growing to roughly half a million souls, but the planet was abandoned when the Times of Chaos threatened to cut it off from vital supplies and not looked at again until some two hundred years ago, when it was rediscovered in the archives.
A small science team set up on the planet and discovered that PQX-176-R though now dead and frozen, had once harbored life and had in fact featured intelligent life at one point - it is likely the original colony had made similar discoveries, but those discoveries were lost in the Times of Chaos.
The ancient civilization, now called the Milac, predates the original settlers by at least several hundred thousand years. With the potential for much scientific discovery, scientists prepared a base for a larger combined expedition by several nations using the remnants of the early settlers as well as certain Milac ruins.
During this expedition, tensions between two of the participating nations rose to a point where war seemed inevitable. In an effort to settle the matter peacefully, the expedition leaders wrote an open letter to their respective governments requesting they come to the then still mostly unnamed rogue to see what had been accomplished through cooperation.
As it was neutral territory, both leaders visited the world and at this location a treaty was signed to resolve the issue peacefully. Afterwards, whenever issues arose between members of the expedition, they would meet on PQX-176-R and discuss the matter.
Using the remnants of the ancient city as a jump start, new buildings were constructed to host these meetings and governments sent ambassadors to have a permanent presence on the planet, growing into Unity City.
Almost half a century ago, the planet became the symbolic capital of the newly formed Union and was renamed Unity.
Since the planet has no star, it is roughly similar everywhere. The planet has poles, but they are the same temperature as the equator. Its north pole points straight at the galactic center and will for at least another twenty-thousand years as it revolves around the galaxy.
