The Jedi follow a simple code of conduct.

Emotion, yet peace.

Ignorance, yet knowledge.

Passion, yet serenity.

Chaos, yet harmony.

Death, yet the Force.

This is a left over from before the times of chaos. Due to the vagueness of the code not all Jedi have the same interpretation of the code and how they should live by it.
