Innkeeper Haldor Greystone

Residence: The Snowdrift Inn

The tundra doesn’t care who you are. It’ll freeze a noble as fast as a beggar. But here? Here, we keep the cold outside and the warmth in your belly. Now sit, and tell me what trouble you’re looking for.

— Haldor Greystone

Title: Owner of the Snowdrift Inn, Former Ranger

Age: Late 50s

Race: Human

Appearance

Haldor Greystone is a rugged, broad-shouldered man with the unmistakable look of someone who has spent most of his life braving the frozen wilderness. His skin is weathered and windburned, a deep tan with patches of frostbite scars along his cheeks and neck. His once-black hair has gone entirely gray, tied back in a short ponytail, with a thick, unruly beard streaked with white. His dark brown eyes are sharp, constantly scanning his surroundings out of habit, giving him an air of quiet vigilance.

Haldor dresses simply but warmly, favoring heavy woolen tunics, fur-lined boots, and a leather apron worn over his clothes when tending to the inn. A long, patched cloak hangs by the hearth, adorned with a faded sigil of the Frosthaven Vanguard, a mark of his past service. He carries a battered but well-maintained froststeel dagger at his belt—not for show but as a reminder of his years spent defending Frosthaven’s borders.

His movements are deliberate, his steps heavy and steady, often accompanied by a slight limp—an old injury earned while battling a frost troll during his days as a ranger.

Personality

Haldor is a no-nonsense, practical man with a deep sense of loyalty to Frosthaven and its people. Though gruff and reserved, he possesses a quiet warmth that draws others to him. He prefers action over words, offering advice and assistance in his own unassuming way. To most patrons, he is a stoic figure, quick with a dry quip or a raised eyebrow when someone complains about the cold.

However, beneath his gruff exterior lies a deeply compassionate man. Haldor is known for offering free meals or shelter to those down on their luck, often without saying a word about it. He views the Snowdrift Inn as more than just a business—it’s a sanctuary where adventurers, travelers, and locals can find warmth and camaraderie in a harsh world.

Haldor has a wealth of knowledge about the tundra and its dangers, though he rarely speaks of his own exploits. He values humility and hard work, often encouraging others to face their challenges head-on. Despite his age, he remains fiercely protective of the inn’s patrons, willing to step in if a fight breaks out or if trouble comes to his door.

History

Haldor grew up in Frosthaven as the son of a tanner, learning early on how to endure the tundra’s challenges. As a young man, he joined the Frosthaven Vanguard, where he earned a reputation as a skilled tracker and marksman. Over the years, he became a trusted ranger, leading scouting missions into the wilds to hunt frost trolls, guide caravans, and protect the city’s borders.

During one particularly brutal mission, Haldor’s patrol encountered a frost troll warband. Though they managed to defeat the creatures, Haldor was gravely injured, his leg crushed beneath a collapsing ice shelf. Unable to continue his ranger duties, he reluctantly retired from the Vanguard and turned his focus to a quieter life.

Determined to remain useful, Haldor used his savings to purchase and renovate the Snowdrift Inn, transforming it into a haven for adventurers and travelers. Over the years, he has become a fixture of Frosthaven, offering wisdom, warmth, and a place to rest for those brave enough to venture into the tundra.
