The Frosthaven Chronicles

No tags

After purchasing a brand new journal to write in, as well as a fresh ink and quill. Snowdrop starts to write the story of her first foray into the snowy wilderness.

"I was part of a party tasked with escorting a mage into the wilderness to shut down a pool of corruption. Apparently these things are common in this part of this world but no one knows much about it."

So we trekked out into the ice and snow. I have to admit, even though its very cold, the place does have a beauty all of its own. I think we were only a hour out from Frosthaven when we detected magic coming over the hill in front of us Upon cresting the top of the hill, we saw a pool of purple swirling miasma below it accompanied by flashes of light. It felt .... wrong and looked foreboding.

Our wizard type had a scroll, given to him by the Archmagus that could shut this pool of corruption down. But as we approached a giant four armed goliath rose out of the pool and attacked us.

It looks bad for a bit but with arrow fire, magic missiles, a Ray of Enfeeblement and one lucky bullet, we brought the beast down. It's weapons were covered in some sort of corrupting miasma so we wrapped them up carefully for transport. Meanwhile the mage used the scroll and to our surprise, the scroll expanded, and basically absorbed the pool and the goliath's body, leaving nothing, effectively containing the miasma.

So, with the job done, we returned to Frosthaven where a reward awaited us. I later discovered that my companions were named Jaeson (the mage), Pirith (hunter/scout), Ilyra (archer), and Yasmine (another mage),

This mission saw me with Torvak (a dwarf that keeps calling me 'Tiny'), Khale (barbarian), and Lars (gunslinger), going out into the Frozen Wastes to find and escort in, an overdue caravan. We found the caravan under attack by goblins (green ones, not the blue snow goblins I was expecting), so proceeded to dispatch them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As luck would have it, the first three went down quickly but the Gods must have decided to have some fun as the last one took a ... rather unexpectant long time to go down. But down it finally went. We then cured ourselves up and helped the wagon get to Frosthaven with no further incident.

After talking with Jaeson about the Geothermal Train that goes between Frosthaven and Ironhearth, I decided to check it out. At the station, I discovered that the station was still being built and tracks were still being laid from both ends to meet in the middle. I also discovered that the workers had seen large creatures with red glowing eyes down the tunnel.

So Jaeson, Ilyra and I went to investigate. After a while going down the tunnel, following the tracks, we encountered two large rats. A fierce battle ensured with the rats burrowing and dragging us down their holes. For a while, it looked really bad for Jaeson and myself but teamwork saved the day and we ended up dragging the two rat corpses back for a reward.

The foreman also said that they should have the network up and running in a few months. I can hardly wait to ride it.

Snowdrop writes this entry in her new journal with a smile on her face. A battered round object, bearing the symbol of the Open Road on it, sits on the table nearby.

"I have to admit that I feel a rather great sense of accomplishment today, because, today, I was reunited with my Wayfinder. True, it's not working and looks like something tried to eat it but, at least my name plate is intact. I suppose I could always buy a regular compass, mount it in a replica case and put the plaque in that, or try and get it fixed. I was able to retrieve my old backpack and journal. Pity about the rest. I guess I'm going to end up having to explain to a seamstress what a 'bi-kini' is. Bi means two and kini is an azaketi word for swimming. They are going to have NO idea what I'm talking about and would probably think I'm crazy anyway. Wouldn't be the first time.'

It was witb the help of Jaeson, Pirith, Ilyra aka Felicia Milkbone, and a woman called Yasmine Bronzeclaw (she's really cute and a sorceress), that we trekked out into the snow and ice in order to find the spot where I had been attacked. We had planned which day we would go in advance but the weather was rather nasty, starting off with a blinding blizzard. Fortunately that died down after a bit and I soon recognised a rocky outcrop backdropped by a thicket of trees, the place where I had prepared my last stand. I dug in that area but found nothing.

That was then we saw a tattered tent in the trees. I was sure that wasn't there before so we went to investigate. Inside, it looked abandoned but, what I did find was my backpack, Unfortunately all that was left inside was my journal that chronicled all my adventures with the Pathfinder Society. Everything else was missing.

As I was retrieving what was mine, we were attacked by three skeletal undead creatures that were bipedal with large curved horns. They had been in a pit that Felicia nearly fell into. Combat ensured. Yasmine nearly went down but retaliated with magic. So did Jaeson. For some reason, the sight of the Open Road symbol really enraged them and I was knocked into unconscious and near death.

Once the enemy were down, we healed up and searched the pit. All we found down there was some froststeel ore. Also nearby, an encampment of Emberforge was seen, something else I was sure hadn't been there before. The Emberforge are not known for their hospitality to strangers but the ore may give us a chance to trade, assuming they had found more of my gear, especially the Wayfinder. A Wayfinder is basically a Pathfinder's badge of office and we are awarded those when we graduate from training,

Fortunately they let us in, after we stated our business and we were conducted to a rather large dwarf, called Bronn, who was working at the forge, We discovered he had found the Wayfinder in his travels but we were able to trade for it with two pieces of the high quality ore. When I got the Wayfinder I discovered it was damaged. A single, deep chew mark marred the side of the device. Plus the compass mechanism was broken. At least the plaque was intact and it was my hope that a good tinkerer could fix the compass. It was satisfying enough.

Still, I don't know how long I'm going to be here, and I worry that I may never see my family and friends again. At least finding the Wayfinder is a comfort.

Snowdrop opens her journal and makes another entry.

"This morning the city was attacked, at the Glacier Gates, by another monstrous entity, this one having a corruption aura that caused weakness in whomever was unlucky enough to be inside it. Still, this did not deter one brave soul to charge in and try to take it down at the knees - which he managed to do, but not before the main gate was broken and cast asunder, leaving a hole in Frosthaven's defenses.

The rest of us poured on the pressure with arrows and other missile fire. Even the Warden commander and the Archmagus got in on the act, the latter unleashing a Force Barrage that had at least ten missiles in it. Back home, the maximum is five. Maybe that's one reason he's the ArchMagus.

Once the creature had fallen we helped find survivours and cleaned up the mess as best we could.

With me were Felis, Prith, Jaeson. and a few I did not recognise, including the man who dealt the final blow.

I met a new friend yesterday, a rather energetic gnome tinker called Callista who literally bounced into my life while inside some sort of mechanised barrel. But this entry isn't about her, or my current beau, Amber, But Callista was there when this incident occurred.

Callista and I were discussing possible escape stunts (I am SO drawing the line at explosion or fire) when we head this descending whistle coming from outside. So we all went out to see what it was, What we discovered, in a crater was a large rock like boulder - though it's shape was odd -more ovoid than round, and buried partly into the ground. There was some residual heat emanating from it and it was 15ft high and 7ft high. It could have easily flattened the inn, killing everyone inside.

Six Frostwardens were with us, us being Callista, Yasmin, Zin & Tian. We studied it for a bit and concluded it had fallen from the sky. A meteorite? That seemed odd, but if it was, it could contain valuable Star metal.

That was when it exploded and three monstrous large creatures came out to attack. They looked like bugbears to me and each one was wielding a halberd. The fight was hard and vicious as these things were tough and hit hard. We nearly lost a warden and Tian. but, eventually, we were able to prevail. No magic was detected and the Academy was alerted but, somehow, I don't think this was the other shoe falling that I had been expecting since the Gate attack - not yet anyway.

We nearly died today - all of us, defending the city from a potential bugbear invasion.

I had just got off gate guarding and somehow got myself involved in an incident with Callista and a chicken and egg merchant. While we were dealing with that, an unusual storm rolled in, complete with purple and that weird ultra-violent lighting. Then there was that whistling sound again but this time, not one, not two, but SIX of those rock like bugbear egg capsules came crashing into the ground - and given that there were three bugbears per egg, we were soon facing eighteen bugbears. I hope that merchant got away safe.

There was Pirith, Callista, a gunslinger named Lars Icelake, myself and a large bunch of Frostwardens up against this really tough looking horde - and I tell you, it looked really grim for a while. Lars was bleeding badly, I was feeling woozy, Pirith wasn't looking too good either, and I had no idea what happened to Callista at the time. Fortunately the presence of the archers, Pirith's accurate shooting, the brave Frostwardens that steadfastly held the line and the damage Lars was dealing with his weapon (which was lots compared to mine) turned the tide in our favour, but it was close. Too darn close.

Once the battle was over, I helped with the healing as the Arch Magus teleported in. I asked him about these egg capsules and where they were coming from but he wouldn't say, although he did have some thoughts about that. The capsules were taken to the Academy for examination and, since we were all hurting from corruption, it was off to the Temple for healing and decontamination.

No sign of Callista all this time so, once I was out of the Temple, I went looking for her. Praise Desna that she was safe in her workshop and constructing up a storm. Don't blame her poor girl. I felt a bit useless in that fight too. Something I really need to work on.

And this STILL wasn't the other shoe I had been dreading. No. I'm fairly sure this is something else.

My first mission as a Relic Hunter. It was the day after the near fatal battle with the bugbears that I received a note from the ArchMagus wanting me to go to some ruins and get some rubbings of ancient tablets that might have a clue about where these bugbear egg rocks were coming from or at least some information about them.

So, led by Felis, Zin (a mute monk) and I set out into the Crystal Mire. On the way, we encountered a campsite. No visible entities, no tracks either. So, fearing possible danger, we snuck in without announcing ourselves. This, in hindsight, might not have been a smart move as when Zin lifted the tent flap and a human female with red hair erupted out of the tent and took up an aggressive posture. Turned out she was a druid named Willow, and her parents had been taken by raiders so she thought we were raiders. It took a bit of persuasion to talk her down and it didn't help that Felis and her got into a shouting match which attracted the attention of three Frost Hound trainers, who told us that shouting in the Tundra is not a good idea as sound can carry over a fair distance.

After the situation was de-escalated, Willow agreed to guide us to the ruins. What we found was the remains of a tower that had fallen down. While Zin mapped the area I went inside and found six tablets I could take rubbings of. The rest were too badly damaged. They had worrying information as well. They told of a time when death rained from the sky, giant stone eggs that disgorged fearsome inhuman warriors, and they laid waste to whatever they found... that these eggs sometimes would rain for days with more and more fearsome beasts coming out, other times it would only be one or two instances. Could there be some sort of periodic pattern? And unfortunately there was no clue to the egg's origin,

The rubbings were obtained without incident and taken back to the city. We left Willow at her camp on the way. I turned the rubbings over to the ArchMagus and went researching in the library. Is it possible these things were being fired at us from another planet? Or maybe another turtle.
