While the time required to meditate varies based on the size and complexity of the area, thaumaturges generally know they are ready to perform the ritual once they have found the correct focal point and tokens. The thaumaturges begin this ritual by drawing an elaborate warding circle at the boundary they wish to wardfocal point of the mystical energies that mark the area to be warded as one area. They then place the chime, the lead thaumaturge and the mcGuffingtokens in a triangulation in the centre of the circle, while the remaining thaumaturges take up their positions around the border of the circle. The lead thaumaturge then chants his will into the chime, while he uses his a point of his blood to complete the circle and the mcGuffintokens to focus the chime to the nature of the boundary they wish to ward. Upon successful compleOnce enchanted, the chime will sound on any event that might potentially threaten the area. While this might sound like its very informative it is actually its mayor weakness, for the chime cannot tell the difference between the butt end of a cigarette on a rainy day and an arsonist during dry season. Therefore thaumaturges often exercise special care to select the tokens, the location of the ritual the chime will sound once. Thereafter it will continue working for one week, sounding once for every event that potentially threatens the boundary the chime was focused on. **System**: Among events that can threaten the boundary are at least all thaumaturgic rituals, since they, by their nature, have to potential to fail in highly unpredictable ways. The chime will always sound at the same volume, regardless of the distance of the triggering event. The chime will sound unfailingly on any event that might threaten the boundary. While this might sound like its very strong, it is actually its mayor weakness for the chime cannot tell the difference between the butt end of a cigarette on a rainy day and an arsonist during dry season. Therefore thaumaturges often exercise special care to select the mcGuffin, the location of the ritual and the particularities of the warding circle to let and the particularities of the warding circle to let the chime ward only the area and the portion of the boundary they are actually interested in. This often requires trade-offs where eliminating a lot of the false positives might also exclude some actually interesting events from the warded area. Making these deliberationsFurthermore, the chime has to remain exposed to the elements. Which can cause random events such as hailstones or gusts of wind that sound the chime; or even cause the chime to move in the first place typically require intimate knowledge ofandem with the clapper to prevent a sounding while actual danger lurks. **System**: Among events that can threaten the boundary are at least all thaumaturgic rituals, since they, by their nature, have to potential to fail in highly unpredictable ways. The chime will always sound at the same volume, regardless of the distance of the triggering event. During preparation the thaumaturge makes one extended (Wits + Survival) roll per full day they spend in the area tountil they have accumulated 10 successes per square mile to get to know the area. Spending time in not-nature will rapidly increase the difficulty for the day the transgression happened. It is impossible to leave the area during meditation and the area alters itself to include the paths of the thaumaturge if required. This usually changes the number of successes required. The difficulty of the preparation roll depends on how precise the thaumaturge wants to be. For example, a sufficiently green back-yard is much easier to learn about than central park, but central park is much easier to learn about than "central park, except for the roads and major paths, except for the bits I had to cross to get around" Upon successful completion of the ritual the chime will sound once. Thereafter it will continue working for one week, sounding once for every event that potentially threatens the area the chime was focused on. If this ritual is already active the enchanted chime and an effigy of the tokens can be wardedused to repeat the ritual and the nature of the boundary that is warded. As some practical examples a particularly bad combination of location, warding circle and mcGuffin might resultmaintain the enchantment for another week. Normally an apprentice should be able to perform this maintenance even without proper thaumaturgic training in a chime that will chime for any event that could threaten any boundary anywhere, while performing the ritual in central park, with a warding circle drawn with natural materials that represents the park accurately, with a mcGuffin that serves as an arcane link to both the hedge and central park will only make the chime chime for events in central park that threaten the boundary between this world and the hedge. On the other hand, it is nigh impossible to find a mcGuffin that serves as an arcane link to both the umbra and central park without significantly altering the nature of central park first. ==== Focusing the ill-tuned chime (maintenance) (Rank custom - 5) ==== **Prerequistes**: [[Focusing the ill-tuned chime (Rank custom)]]; **Experience**: free \\ **Activation**: 30 minutes \\ **Ingredients**: The chime used in the prerequiste ritual, an effigy constructed our of ordinary materials; see text. To begin this ritual the chime will sound once. Thereafter the thaumaturge will draw a greatly simplified warding circle, placing the chime, themself and the effigy in a triangulation in the centre of theif they are careful to not disturb the magic circle. They then chant their will into the chime, while he uses his a point of his blood to complete the circle and the effigy to focus the chime to the nature of the boundary they wish to ward. **System**: This ritual will extend the duration of its prerequiste by one week and can only be performed in the final week of its duration. The effigy used in this ritual should represent the mcGuffing used in its prerequiste. While this ritual is much more lax than its prerequiste a particularly hasty or lousy thaumaturge might still find themselves accidentally widening the scope of its prerequiste.
