Spell List

Old version of Spell List

In Dungeons & Dragons, spells are magical effects wielded by certain classes, such as wizards, clerics, and sorcerers. Spells can have a wide range of effects, from dealing damage to enemies to healing allies, to altering the environment, to gathering information, and more.

Here's a breakdown of the key elements of spells:

Spell Level: Spells are categorized into levels, from 0 (also known as cantrips) to 9. The level of a spell generally indicates its power and the level of the caster required to use it. Higher-level spells are typically more powerful but also require more resources to cast.

Casting Time: This indicates how long it takes to cast the spell. Most spells have a casting time of one action, but some might require a bonus action, a reaction, or even several minutes or hours.

Range: This indicates how far away the target of the spell can be. Some spells target the caster themselves (range of self), while others can be cast at targets hundreds of feet away.

Components: These are the physical requirements to cast the spell, which can include verbal (V), somatic (S), and material (M) components. Verbal components involve chanting or incantations, somatic components involve gestures, and material components involve specific items.

Duration: This indicates how long the spell's effects last. Some spells are instantaneous, while others can last for minutes, hours, or even indefinitely.

School of Magic: Each spell belongs to a school of magic, such as Evocation (which involves energy and elemental forces), Necromancy (which involves life and death), or Illusion (which involves deceiving the senses or minds of others).

Description: This provides a detailed explanation of what the spell does. It's important to read this carefully, as the specifics can greatly impact how the spell is used in the game.

To cast a spell, a character typically needs to have the spell prepared (for classes like wizards and clerics) or known (for classes like sorcerers and bards), and they need to expend a spell slot of the spell's level or higher. Some classes, like warlocks, have a different system for spellcasting.
