Little is known about the so called ‘Fifth Energy’, besides that it can be found in the Beyond. Since the Beyond does not connect directly to the material world, it is rare to encounter, though on occasion it leaks through other planes into the material world.

The most common form encountered is when the energies leak from the Beyond through the Umbra, which converts the energy into Shadow, used by some for Shadow Magic. Originally, Shadow was believed to be the Fifth Energy until it was discovered that Shadow itself is a refined form of the Fifth Energy.

Besides Shadow, most interactions with the Fifth Energy are best avoided as it tends to drive those near it, let alone those who research it --- supernatural or not --- completely mad. Those who have tried to wield its power have all inevitably been driven mad making it hard to know what parts of the insane ramblings in their logs is actual research and what is just pure lunacy.

The Fifth Energy might further interact with the other energies to create unique and unexplained effects, though it is hard to say anything with certainty. It is unknown if it exists in other forms beyond Shadow.
