We've been going with new FWURG for a while now. And while playing my new character Aava in the Fetching Padawan mission, I have discovered that I am lacking a good "feeling" for the character.
Because I think that FWURG is an awesome game, I have decided to switch to being a Storyteller only for now. This allows me to focus on the setting, the economic and political rules, and running jedi missions.
(This means that I will semi-retire Aava after the completion of her current mission.)
If you want to know how I came to this decision, read on!
What happened I loved Jedi roleplay on old FWURG, and I was very hyped to start a new character on FWURG. However if I'm being completely honest, I think I started a character for the wrong reasons: I wanted very much to play a Jedi once more after OldFWURG, and I wanted to play a Jedi right from the start so I wouldn't fall "behind".
Now, I have the feeling that I rushed into it, and that has come back to me in the form of lack of inspiration with regards to the character. After some thinking about the situation, I have concluded that this is due to two things (that are really the same thing in the end):
- The first is not having my own world, with its own culture to base my Jedi character's point of view on. Not being able to fall back on the culture of a custom world makes it really hard to get a feeling for how she would see the world—strange enough her character's origins are as cookie-cutter jedi as they can be, as she was raised in the Jedi Order.
- The second is a lack of content in the game setting. If you have a look at the Setting, you'll quickly see that we have lots of Jedi content, but almost no "general universe" things. For me, this means that my character is operating almost entirely in a void, without any connection to the world.
As you can see, in both cases, there is a lack of connection with the larger game world. Either via a custom world, or via the existing world.
Solution Since I would very much like FWURG to run for a long time I have decided to semi-retire Aava after her first mission, and take up the mantle of Storyteller for the time being. To get cracking on the following:
- I have set aside two time slots in the week for running Jedi missions and other roleplay (the slots are on Wednesday and Saturday).
- I will also be working on the setting. This will include things like drafting up a few non-economic worlds, working on a starmap of the system, and fleshing out both Unity City and several locations and NPCs in it.
- I will work on finishing up the economic and political rules, which will allow people to start their own worlds again. To support this, Mercury and I have plans to build tooling support into the RPGpad platform itself.
It is my hope that by focusing on FWURG as a Storyteller, I will be able to contribute to the game in a way that sees the game providing enjoyment and interest for years to come.
(And also, by having players play economic worlds again we regain the weekly turn reports—this time bolstered by some more automation—that are so very important for getting people back into the game for a short moment every week.)
