Table of Content

The format I was using suddenly shifted, and now it's showing up as a Table of Content as opposed to just a layout of the Wiki Pages like before.

__toc__ - This tag is appearing suddenly, and I have no way to remove it, or revert it back to its original view.

Thanks for bringing this up!

I've looked at the situation and your campaign specifically. I believe what you are seeing is intended behavior, which we changed in a recent update (see the Changelog 2021-10-08).

I'll explain what's changed (and why) and how you can still find the old page you were familiar with (just in a different location).

Let me know though if this addresses your concern. If not, or if I have misunderstood your issue, do let me know!

What's changed

We have added a Table of Contents page, which is now the default page you are taken to if you press 'Setting', 'Rules' or 'Notes' and have not set a special start page for your campaign. Before, you would be taken to the Index page.

In the Evertail campaign, you have a start page set for the Setting namespace, but not for the Rules or Notes pages, so if you press Rules or Notes, you will now be taken to the Table of Contents instead of the Index page.

The Index page was a list of every page on the wiki, both by their default name and any alternative names you might have given to that page (such as an alias for an NPC).

The Table of Contents page also lists every page on the wiki, but groups them by schema. For example, the Table of Contents for the Setting of your campaign (link) groups pages for Classes, Deities, Locations, etc. - but it still lists all of them.

Why though?

The reason for changing from Index to Table of Contents is to help make things easier to find.

The Index is generally used when you want to go to a specific page you already know or if you want to see a list of every page.

The Table of Contents is more useful if you want to explore the content to see what is there or if you are trying to find something but don't know exactly what it is. Like that NPC who you don't quite recall the name of.

Our reasoning is that the latter scenario is probably more common, so we gave priority to the Table of Contents. The Index is still available though.

We also detail some of our thoughts in a recent blogpost: Wiki Gardening Improvements

How can I find the old Index page?

The old page that used to be listed there and which you were familiar with is not gone. We just been moved it to a slightly different location.

To find the index of a given namespace (Setting, Rules or Notes), first go to that namespace and then press the Index button in the top right corner of the header - it is at the same level as the Forum | Chat | Setting etc. buttons, on the right.

Note that the button will only appear if you are already in the right namespace (including the Table of Content)

Btw, if you are in the table of contents, you can also open the index by clicking the 'Full Index' button in the page menu - that's perhaps a bit superfluous, but it keeps the page menu consistent between various organizational pages for the wiki.

Is there a way to revert it back to how it looked? When I click on "Setting" it comes up the correct view. But if I click "Rules" or "Notes" it brings up the ToC which I don't personally want.

Is there a way to revert it back?

Thanks for the clarification. And yes, that's possible!

What happened with your campaign is that RPGpad could no longer find a page called "Start" in the Rules, so it switched to showing the table of contents. (It has to show something ^_^ )

If you have a page named "Start" it will be shown instead of the table of contents. If you do not have such a page, the

Looking at your wiki activity, I'm guessing that your renamed the Start page in Rules to "Game Rules", and the one in Notes to "Sources". There's two options to get what you want:

  • The 'does exactly what you want' option: Rename the pages you want as starting page by updating the page's Real Name to "Start" (allowing RPGpad to recognize them as your chosen startin page), but keep the title you wanted to show to players. (An example of this can be seen in my Little Mikos campaign's Rules start.) To set a page's real name, hot the 'Advanced...' button next to the page's title when editing. See the Using Names, Aliases and Real Names help page for details!
  • The 'just revert it' option: Rename the "Game Rules" and "Sources" pages back to "Start". This will allow RPGpad to pick them up again as the start page for those wikis. I suggest using the real name trick, as it allows you to keep the display title you wanted.

Hope this explanation and the options to get what you want help. If not, drop us a line here.

Thank you! That fixed the issue

Sorry - next question.

For the chat room.

"An optional link to the IC location that this chat room represents. If the room has no image, the location's image will be used."

When I input the Wiki page https://rpgpad.com/c/evertail/setting/underbelly for example, it comes up as "[ /rpgpad.com/c/evertail/setting/underbelly ]" in red. Is that not how this functions, or am I missing something?

If a link comes up red, that means that RPGpad could not find the page you want to link to.

When RPGpad asks for a link (which is any field with the little chain icon in it), it needs to get what we call an "internal link". In this case that would be "setting/underbelly", or even just "Underbelly" because the "setting" wiki is the default for that field.

Next time, you can probably just start typing the name of the page in any link field, the autocomplete will suggest matching options and fix the wiki prefix for you if needed!

Let us know if that helps out!

As an aside: I noticed that you paste the full URL into your wiki page text. That is not actually necessary: RPGpad understands internal links in freeform text as well.

So for example (leaving out one [ to prevent the forum from making it a real link): [https://rpgpad.com/c/evertail/setting/noble_houses|Noble Houses]] can really be done as [[Noble Houses]]. This has two big benefits for you: it's easier to write down, and RPGpad can automatically rewrite those links if you rename or move the page. The Text Formatting Help and the Links Help have a lot of details on how RPGpad handles such things.

And yes, boxes like this can also be done on any wiki page ^_^

Ah! Thank you, I wasn't sure. I appreciate the help :)
